  • Sodium and Oxygen Reaction: Products, Equation & Safety
The reaction of sodium metal (Na) with oxygen gas (O₂) produces sodium oxide (Na₂O).

    Here's the balanced chemical equation:

    4 Na + O₂ → 2 Na₂O

This reaction is highly exothermic, meaning it releases a lot of heat and light, and can be quite vigorous.

It's important to note that sodium oxide is not the only product that can form in this reaction. If the reaction occurs in the presence of excess oxygen, sodium peroxide (Na₂O₂) can also be formed.
