  • Cobalt Transparency: Understanding Its Properties and Applications
Cobalt is not transparent. It is a metallic element with a silver-gray color.

Metals, in general, are opaque to visible light because their electrons are free to move throughout the material. These free electrons absorb and re-emit photons of light, preventing light from passing through.

However, cobalt can be used to create transparent blue glass, which is a result of the cobalt ions absorbing certain wavelengths of light and transmitting others. This is a different process from the transparency of the metal itself.
