  • Understanding the Chemical Formula of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂)
Nitrogen dioxide has the formula NO₂.

    Here's why:

    * Nitrogen (N) is in group 15 of the periodic table and typically forms three bonds.

    * Oxygen (O) is in group 16 and typically forms two bonds.

To achieve stable octets, nitrogen needs three bonds and oxygen needs two. This leads to the structure NO₂ where nitrogen forms a double bond with one oxygen and a single bond with the other.
