  • Oxygen: Why It's Not a Mineral - Definition & Properties
Oxygen is not considered a mineral. Here's why:

    * Minerals are solid: Oxygen exists naturally as a gas.

    * Minerals have a defined chemical composition: Oxygen is a single element, not a compound with a specific ratio of elements.

    * Minerals have a specific crystalline structure: Oxygen does not form crystals in its natural state.

While oxygen is essential for life and found in many minerals, it itself doesn't meet the criteria to be classified as a mineral.
