  • Understanding Chemical Formulas: Examples and Compound Composition

    Example: H₂O

This is the chemical formula for water. It tells us:

    * The elements present: This compound is made up of hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O).

    * The ratio of atoms: There are two hydrogen atoms for every one oxygen atom.

What else does it tell us about the compound?

    * The chemical composition: This formula precisely defines the exact composition of water.

    * The properties: The chemical formula, along with the arrangement of atoms within the molecule, determines the physical and chemical properties of water, such as its liquid state at room temperature, its ability to dissolve many substances, and its role as a solvent in many biological processes.

    * The name: Based on the chemical formula, we know that the compound is water.

Important note: The chemical formula does not tell us about the structure of the molecule. While we know the ratio of atoms, it doesn't specify how they are connected to each other.
