  • Sodium Reacting with Water: Products, Reaction & Chemical Equation
When sodium reacts with water, it produces:

    * Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), a strong base. This is the main product of the reaction.

    * Hydrogen gas (H2), which is flammable and can be ignited by the heat of the reaction.

    * Heat, which is released as a byproduct of the reaction.

The reaction is highly exothermic, meaning it releases a lot of heat, and can even cause the sodium metal to melt and the hydrogen gas to ignite.

Here's the chemical equation for the reaction:

    2 Na (s) + 2 H2O (l) → 2 NaOH (aq) + H2 (g)

Important Note: This reaction is extremely dangerous and should only be performed by trained professionals in a controlled environment.
