  • Scandium Chloride (ScCl₃): Formation, Properties & Uses
    When scandium (Sc) and chlorine (Cl) combine, they form scandium chloride (ScCl₃).

    Here's why:

    * Scandium is a metal in group 3 of the periodic table, meaning it typically forms a +3 cation (Sc³⁺).

    * Chlorine is a nonmetal in group 17, meaning it typically forms a -1 anion (Cl⁻).

    To balance the charges, three chlorine atoms are needed for every scandium atom. This results in the chemical formula ScCl₃.

    Scandium chloride is a white, hygroscopic solid that is highly soluble in water. It is used in various applications, including:

    * High-intensity lighting

    * Production of other scandium compounds

    * Catalysis

    * Electronic materials
