  • Nitrogen and Lime Water: Understanding the Reaction (or Lack Thereof)
Nitrogen gas (N₂) does not react with lime water (calcium hydroxide solution, Ca(OH)₂).

    Here's why:

    * Nitrogen is an inert gas: Nitrogen is very unreactive due to its strong triple bond between the nitrogen atoms. It does not readily participate in chemical reactions under normal conditions.

    * Lime water is a base: Lime water is a basic solution.

    * No reaction occurs: Nitrogen, being inert, doesn't react with the hydroxide ions (OH-) in the lime water solution.

Important Note: While nitrogen itself doesn't react with lime water, other nitrogen-containing compounds might. For example, ammonia (NH₃) reacts with lime water to form calcium ammonium hydroxide, a cloudy white precipitate.
