  • Sulfuric Acid Formation: Understanding Acid Rain's Cause
    The acid formed when sulfur oxides (SOx) mix with rainwater is sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄).

    Here's how it happens:

    1. Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and sulfur trioxide (SO₃) are released into the atmosphere, primarily from burning fossil fuels.

    2. In the atmosphere, SO₂ reacts with oxygen and water to form sulfuric acid. The reaction can be summarized as:

    * SO₂ + H₂O + ½ O₂ → H₂SO₄

    Sulfuric acid is a strong acid and contributes significantly to acid rain, which can have harmful effects on the environment, including:

    * Damage to forests and crops

    * Acidification of lakes and rivers, harming aquatic life

    * Corrosion of buildings and infrastructure

    * Respiratory problems in humans
