  • Understanding Molecular Formulas: Definition & Examples
The chemical formula of a molecular compound is called a molecular formula.

    Here's why:

    * Molecular compounds are formed by the sharing of electrons between nonmetal atoms.

    * Molecular formulas represent the actual number of atoms of each element present in one molecule of the compound.

    For example:

    * The molecular formula of water is H₂O, indicating that one molecule of water contains two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.

    * The molecular formula of carbon dioxide is CO₂, indicating that one molecule of carbon dioxide contains one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms.
