  • Understanding Hydrogen Bonds: A Water Molecule Example
A classic example of a hydrogen bond is the one between water molecules.

    Here's how it works:

    * Polarity: Water (H₂O) is a polar molecule. The oxygen atom has a slightly negative charge, while the hydrogen atoms have slightly positive charges.

    * Hydrogen Bonding: The slightly positive hydrogen atom of one water molecule is attracted to the slightly negative oxygen atom of another water molecule. This attraction is called a hydrogen bond.

This hydrogen bonding is responsible for many of water's unique properties, including its high boiling point, surface tension, and ability to dissolve many substances.
