  • Solar Prominences: What They Are & Their Impact
The streamer of gas between sunspots is called a prominence.

Prominences are large, bright features that extend outwards from the Sun's surface. They are made up of cool, dense plasma that is held in place by magnetic fields. Prominences can last for days, weeks, or even months.

They can erupt, releasing enormous amounts of energy and material into space. These eruptions, known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), can have a significant impact on Earth, causing geomagnetic storms that can disrupt communication and power grids.
