  • Understanding Elements: What is a Single Atom?
A substance made up of a single atom is called an element.

    Here's why:

    * Elements are the simplest pure substances. They cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.

    * Atoms are the smallest unit of an element that retains the chemical properties of that element.

So, a single atom of gold is a gold element, a single atom of oxygen is an oxygen element, and so on.
