  • Diffusion Explained: How Gases Spread and Mix
The ability of a gas to completely spread out and mix with other substances is called diffusion.

    Here's why:

    * Gas molecules have high kinetic energy: They are constantly moving and colliding with each other.

    * Weak intermolecular forces: Gases have very weak forces of attraction between their molecules.

    * Large spaces between molecules: The molecules in a gas are far apart, leaving plenty of empty space.

These factors allow gas molecules to easily move and intermingle with other gas molecules or even molecules of a different substance, like a liquid or a solid. This process of spreading out and mixing is called diffusion.

Example: If you open a bottle of perfume in a room, you will eventually smell it throughout the entire room. This is because the perfume molecules diffuse through the air, spreading out until they are evenly distributed.
