  • Pigments vs. Dyes: Understanding Colorants & Their Differences
Colored substances that are used to color other materials are called pigments.

    Here's why:

    * Pigments are insoluble substances that impart color by absorbing certain wavelengths of light and reflecting others.

    * Dyes are soluble substances that color materials by attaching themselves to the material's molecules.

So, while both pigments and dyes are used to color things, they work in different ways.
