  • Salt and Water: Solution vs. Mixture - Understanding Dissolving
Salt and water form a solution. Here's why:

    * Solution: A homogeneous mixture where one substance (solute) dissolves completely into another (solvent).

    * Mixture: A combination of two or more substances where each substance retains its own properties.

When salt (NaCl) is added to water (H₂O), the salt crystals break down into individual ions (Na⁺ and Cl⁻). These ions are surrounded by water molecules, effectively dissolving the salt and creating a homogeneous mixture. You can't see the individual salt particles anymore.

Key characteristics of a solution formed by salt and water:

    * Homogeneous: The salt and water are evenly distributed throughout the solution.

    * Transparent: You can see through the solution.

    * Stable: The salt will remain dissolved in the water unless the water evaporates.
