Here's why:
* Formation of Carbonic Acid: When carbon dioxide dissolves in water, it forms carbonic acid (H2CO3). This acid is weak but still plays a significant role in weathering.
* Acid Rain: Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere contributes to acid rain, which is a major cause of chemical weathering. Acid rain can dissolve minerals in rocks, leading to their breakdown.
* Dissolution of Limestone: Carbonic acid is particularly effective at dissolving limestone (calcium carbonate). This process leads to the formation of caves and sinkholes.
Other gases can also contribute to chemical weathering to a lesser extent, but carbon dioxide is by far the most significant.
