  • Universal Indicator: Acid, Base, or Neutral? | Chemistry Explained
A universal indicator is neither an acid nor an alkaline.

    Here's why:

    * Universal indicator is a mixture of several dyes. These dyes change color depending on the pH of the solution they are in.

    * It acts as a visual indicator. It helps us determine the pH of a solution by changing color based on the acidity or alkalinity of the solution.

    * It doesn't have a pH of its own. It's a tool for measuring pH, not a substance with its own pH level.

Think of it as a thermometer for acidity: it tells you the "temperature" of the solution in terms of pH, but doesn't have its own temperature.
