  • Svante Arrhenius: Pioneer of Acid-Base Chemistry | Chemistry Explained
The first person to define acids and bases in chemical terms was Svante Arrhenius in 1884.

    His theory stated:

    * Acids are substances that produce hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water.

    * Bases are substances that produce hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water.

While Arrhenius's theory was a significant step forward, it had limitations as it only applied to aqueous solutions. Later, more comprehensive definitions like Brønsted-Lowry and Lewis were developed.
