  • Understanding -ate Endings in Chemical Compounds
    The name ending for compounds made from a metal, nonmetals, and oxygen is -ate.

    These compounds are known as oxyanions.

    For example:

    * Sulfate: SO₄²⁻ (sulfur, oxygen)

    * Nitrate: NO₃⁻ (nitrogen, oxygen)

    * Phosphate: PO₄³⁻ (phosphorus, oxygen)

    The metal part of the compound will be named as a cation, and the oxyanion will have the "-ate" ending. For example, sodium sulfate (Na₂SO₄) or calcium nitrate (Ca(NO₃)₂).
