  • Solvent vs. Solute: Understanding Solutions in Chemistry
The liquid in a solution is called the solvent.

    Here's why:

    * Solvent: The substance that dissolves the other substance (the solute) to form a solution. It's usually present in a larger amount.

    * Solute: The substance that gets dissolved in the solvent.

For example, in a sugar-water solution:

    * Water is the solvent (it dissolves the sugar).

    * Sugar is the solute (it gets dissolved in the water).
