The stomach produces gastric acid, which is a mixture of hydrochloric acid (HCl), potassium chloride (KCl), and sodium chloride (NaCl). The pH of gastric acid can range from 1.5 to 3.5, making it extremely acidic.
This high acidity is necessary for:
* Digesting food: Gastric acid helps break down food, particularly proteins.
* Killing bacteria: The acidic environment in the stomach kills most bacteria that are ingested with food.
* Activating digestive enzymes: Gastric acid helps activate pepsin, an enzyme that further breaks down proteins.
While other parts of the body can be acidic, like the skin and the vagina, the stomach has the highest acidity level.
