    While there are many substances essential to life, the most fundamental and arguably the most important is water (H2O).

    * Structure and Shape: Water is crucial for maintaining the shape and structure of cells and organisms. For example, it helps maintain the shape of plants.

    Other essential substances:

    * Carbon (C): The backbone of all organic molecules, including carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.

    * Oxygen (O2): Required for cellular respiration, the process that provides energy for life.

    * Nitrogen (N): A key component of proteins and nucleic acids.
