  • Is Freezing a Chemical or Physical Change? Understanding Water's Phase Transition
Freezing of water is a physical change. Here's why:

    * No new substances are formed: When water freezes, it changes state from liquid to solid. The chemical composition (H₂O) remains the same.

    * Change is reversible: Freezing is a reversible process. You can melt the ice back into liquid water by adding heat.

    * Only a change in arrangement of molecules: Freezing involves the water molecules slowing down and becoming more organized in a fixed lattice structure. The chemical bonds between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms within each molecule remain unchanged.

In contrast, a chemical change would involve the formation of new substances with different chemical properties.
