  • Polonium Ion Formation: Understanding Anions and Electron Configuration
Polonium (Po) will form a negative ion (anion). Here's why:

    * Location on the Periodic Table: Polonium is located in Group 16 (also known as the oxygen group or chalcogens) of the periodic table. Elements in this group tend to gain two electrons to achieve a stable electron configuration like the noble gases.

    * Electron Configuration: Polonium has six valence electrons (electrons in its outermost shell). To achieve a stable octet (eight electrons in its outer shell), it needs to gain two electrons.

    * Formation of Anions: When polonium gains two electrons, it forms a negatively charged ion with a -2 charge, denoted as Po²⁻.
