  • Understanding Minerals: What They Are and Where You Find Them
    Many things are made up of minerals! Here are some examples:

    Rocks: This is the most obvious example. Rocks are made up of one or more minerals.

    * Igneous rocks: Formed from cooled magma or lava (e.g., granite, basalt)

    * Sedimentary rocks: Formed from sediments like sand, mud, and shells (e.g., sandstone, limestone)

    * Metamorphic rocks: Formed when existing rocks are transformed by heat and pressure (e.g., marble, slate)

    Soil: Soil is a complex mixture that includes minerals, organic matter, water, and air. The minerals in soil come from the weathering of rocks.

    Gems and Precious Metals: Diamonds, rubies, emeralds, gold, silver, and platinum are all minerals.

    Building Materials: Many building materials are made from minerals:

    * Cement: Made from limestone and other materials

    * Concrete: Made from cement, sand, gravel, and water

    * Bricks: Made from clay

    * Glass: Made from sand, soda ash, and limestone

    Other Things:

    * Tooth enamel: Primarily made up of the mineral hydroxyapatite

    * Bones: Made up of calcium phosphate and other minerals

    * Clays: Minerals that form from the weathering of other rocks

    * Some fertilizers: Contain minerals like phosphorus and potassium

    Important Note: While many things are made up of minerals, not everything is. Things like wood, plastic, and fabrics are not primarily composed of minerals.
