  • Anhydrous Compounds: Definition and Examples
A compound that lacks water is called anhydrous.

The prefix "an" means "without" and "hydrous" refers to water.

For example, copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO₄·5H₂O) contains water molecules in its crystal structure. When heated, it loses its water molecules and becomes anhydrous copper sulfate (CuSO₄).
