  • Understanding Water's Chemical Bonds: Covalent & Hydrogen
Water (H₂O) has two types of bonds:

    * Covalent bonds within the molecule: The hydrogen atoms are covalently bonded to the oxygen atom. This means they share electrons to form a stable molecule.

    * Hydrogen bonds between molecules: The partially positive hydrogen atoms in one water molecule are attracted to the partially negative oxygen atom in another water molecule. These weak bonds are called hydrogen bonds and are responsible for many of water's unique properties, like its high boiling point, high surface tension, and its ability to act as a solvent.
