  • Identifying Chemical Reactions: 4 Key Indicators
Here are four ways you can tell a chemical reaction has occurred:

    1. Change in Color: A chemical reaction often results in a noticeable color change. For example, rusting iron turns from silvery-grey to reddish-brown.

    2. Formation of a Precipitate: A precipitate is a solid that forms from a solution during a reaction. You'll see a cloudy or hazy appearance in the liquid as the solid settles out.

    3. Production of Gas: Some reactions release gases, which can be observed as bubbles forming in a liquid or a change in the odor of the mixture. Think of baking soda and vinegar reacting to produce carbon dioxide gas.

    4. Change in Temperature: Chemical reactions either release heat (exothermic) or absorb heat (endothermic). You might feel a change in temperature, either warming or cooling, if a reaction is happening.

Keep in mind that not all chemical reactions show all four of these signs. Some reactions might only have one or two noticeable changes.
