  • Understanding Antacids: Ingredients & How They Work
Antacids are made of various ingredients, but the main active ingredient is a base that neutralizes stomach acid. This base can be one of several compounds:

    Common Antacid Ingredients:

    * Calcium carbonate (CaCO3): Found in Tums, Rolaids, and many generic brands.

    * Magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2): Found in Milk of Magnesia and Maalox.

    * Aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3): Found in Maalox, Mylanta, and some generic brands.

    * Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3): Found in baking soda and some antacids.

    Other Ingredients:

In addition to the active ingredients, antacids may also contain:

    * Binders: To help hold the ingredients together and give the antacid a specific shape (e.g., tablets, chewables).

    * Flavorings and sweeteners: To make the antacid more palatable.

    * Coloring agents: To give the antacid a specific color.

    How Antacids Work:

When you take an antacid, the base in the antacid reacts with the stomach acid (hydrochloric acid, HCl), forming a salt and water. This reaction neutralizes the acid and reduces heartburn and indigestion.

Note: Antacids are not a cure for heartburn or indigestion. They only provide temporary relief. If you experience frequent or severe heartburn, consult a doctor.
