  • Understanding Anions: What Happens When Atoms Gain Electrons?
When atoms gain electrons, they form anions.

    Here's why:

    * Atoms are neutral: They have an equal number of protons (positive charge) and electrons (negative charge).

    * Gaining electrons: When an atom gains electrons, it becomes more negative because it has more electrons than protons.

    * Anions: This negatively charged species is called an anion.

Example: Chlorine (Cl) atom gains one electron to become chloride ion (Cl⁻).
