  • Elements vs. Compounds: Understanding Pure Substances
A substance that is not a compound is called an element.

    Here's why:

    * Elements are the simplest pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. They are made up of only one type of atom. Examples include gold (Au), oxygen (O), and carbon (C).

    * Compounds are substances formed when two or more different elements combine chemically in a fixed ratio. Examples include water (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and table salt (NaCl).
