  • Ionic Bonds: Understanding Electron Transfer Between Atoms
The terms that describe two atoms when they form a bond in which electrons are completely transferred from one atom to the other are:

    * Ionic bond: This is the primary term used to describe this type of bond.

    * Electrovalent bond: This is another term that is sometimes used, particularly in older texts.

The transfer of electrons creates ions – one atom becomes positively charged (cation) due to losing electrons, while the other becomes negatively charged (anion) due to gaining electrons. The electrostatic attraction between these oppositely charged ions is what constitutes the ionic bond.
