  • Magnesium Chloride Formula: Understanding MgCl₂
There is no compound with the formula MgCl₃. Here's why:

    * Magnesium (Mg) is in Group 2 of the periodic table, meaning it forms ions with a +2 charge (Mg²⁺).

    * Chlorine (Cl) is in Group 17, forming ions with a -1 charge (Cl⁻).

To balance the charges and create a neutral compound, you need two chloride ions for every magnesium ion. The correct formula for magnesium chloride is MgCl₂.
