  • Chlorine Ion Formation: Electron Gain Explained
Chlorine gas (Cl₂) will gain one electron per atom to become an ion. Here's why:

    * Chlorine's Electron Configuration: Chlorine has 7 electrons in its outermost shell. It wants to have a full outer shell of 8 electrons for stability.

    * Gaining an Electron: By gaining one electron, chlorine achieves a stable octet configuration, similar to the noble gas Argon.

    * Formation of Chloride Ion: When chlorine gains an electron, it becomes a negatively charged ion called chloride (Cl⁻).

So, each chlorine atom will gain one electron to form a chloride ion (Cl⁻).
