  • Neutral Substances: Understanding pH and pH 7
    There's no single substance that's definitively "no acid and no alkali". Here's why:

    * The pH Scale: The pH scale measures acidity and alkalinity. A pH of 7 is neutral. Anything below 7 is acidic, and anything above 7 is alkaline (or basic).

    * Most Substances Have a pH: Most substances have a pH, even if it's very slightly acidic or basic.

    * Examples:

    * Pure water is considered neutral with a pH of 7.

    * Salt (sodium chloride) is also neutral.

    * Many organic compounds, like sugar, can be considered neutral in terms of their everyday impact.

    It's more accurate to say that a substance is "neutral" rather than "no acid and no alkali".
