  • Chlorophyll: The Key Pigment in Photosynthesis - Understanding Its Role
The primary pigment in photosynthesis is chlorophyll.

There are actually two main types of chlorophyll:

    * Chlorophyll a is the primary light-absorbing pigment in photosynthesis. It absorbs mainly blue and red light, reflecting green light (which is why plants appear green).

    * Chlorophyll b acts as an accessory pigment, absorbing light in slightly different wavelengths than chlorophyll a. This expands the range of light that can be used for photosynthesis.

While chlorophyll is the primary pigment, plants also contain other pigments, like carotenoids and anthocyanins, which play roles in absorbing light and protecting the plant from damage.
