When magnesium metal (Mg) is added to hydrochloric acid (HCl), the following reaction occurs:

Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) → MgCl₂(aq) + H₂(g)

The gas produced is hydrogen gas (H₂).

This is a classic example of a single displacement reaction where magnesium displaces hydrogen from the acid.
