  • Kerosene and Carbon Tetrachloride: Miscibility Analysis & Why They Don't Mix
Kerosene and carbon tetrachloride are not miscible.

    Here's why:

    * Polarity: Kerosene is a nonpolar hydrocarbon, while carbon tetrachloride is a slightly polar molecule due to its tetrahedral shape and electronegativity difference between carbon and chlorine.

    * "Like dissolves like": This principle states that substances with similar polarities tend to dissolve in each other. Since kerosene is nonpolar and carbon tetrachloride is slightly polar, they don't mix well.

Instead of dissolving, they will form two separate layers with carbon tetrachloride being denser and settling at the bottom.
