  • Hydrogen's Discovery: Tracing the Origins of the Element
Hydrogen was not "discovered" in the sense of being found in a new place. It was discovered as an element by Henry Cavendish in England in 1766.

He observed that a flammable gas was produced when reacting metals with acids, and he named it "inflammable air." Later, Antoine Lavoisier recognized that this gas was a distinct element and named it "hydrogen" (from Greek words meaning "water-former").
