1. Using a Magnet:
* Purpose: Iron is a magnetic material, while salt and sand are not.
* Method:
* Spread the mixture on a flat surface.
* Hold a strong magnet above the mixture.
* Slowly move the magnet across the surface.
* The iron filings will stick to the magnet, allowing you to lift them away from the sand and salt.
2. Using Water and Filtration:
* Purpose: Salt dissolves in water, while sand does not.
* Method:
* Add water to the remaining mixture of sand and salt. Stir thoroughly to dissolve the salt.
* Carefully pour the mixture through a filter paper (like a coffee filter) into a separate container. The sand will be trapped by the filter paper.
* Let the water evaporate from the container, leaving behind the dissolved salt. You can speed up the evaporation by gently heating the container (be careful not to boil the water).
3. Optional: Drying the Sand
* If you want completely dry sand, spread the filtered sand on a clean surface and allow it to air dry completely.
You have now successfully separated the mixture into its three components: iron filings, salt, and sand.
