1. Plastic: While plastics exist in nature (think of amber), the synthetic plastics we use today were invented by scientists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Leo Baekeland's Bakelite (1907) was the first truly synthetic plastic, and countless other types have been developed since then.
2. Stainless Steel: This strong, corrosion-resistant metal was invented by metallurgist Harry Brearley in 1913. It's widely used in everything from kitchen utensils to medical instruments.
3. Kevlar: This incredibly strong and lightweight fiber was developed by Stephanie Kwolek in 1965. It's used in bulletproof vests, protective clothing, and even in the construction of some airplanes.
These are just a few examples, and there are many other materials that have been developed by scientists that we use every day!
