  • Liquid Separation Techniques: Distillation & Separating Funnels
Here are two ways to separate a solution that contains liquids:

    1. Distillation: This method relies on the difference in boiling points between the liquids. The solution is heated, and the liquid with the lower boiling point will evaporate first. The vapor is then collected and condensed back into a liquid, separating it from the original solution. This is commonly used to separate water and alcohol.

    2. Separating Funnel: If the two liquids are immiscible (don't mix), you can use a separating funnel. The funnel is filled with the solution, and the liquids are allowed to settle into separate layers. A stopcock at the bottom of the funnel is opened, allowing the denser liquid to drain out. The lighter liquid remains in the funnel. This is often used to separate water and oil.
