  • Physical vs. Chemical Change: Understanding Broken Objects
    A broken plate is a physical change, not a chemical change. Here's why:

    * Physical Change: Involves a change in the form or appearance of a substance, but not its chemical composition. The molecules of the plate remain the same, even though the plate is broken into smaller pieces.

    * Chemical Change: Involves the formation of new substances with different chemical properties. The molecules of the original substances are rearranged to form new molecules.

    Examples of physical changes:

    * Melting ice

    * Cutting paper

    * Dissolving sugar in water

    Examples of chemical changes:

    * Burning wood

    * Cooking an egg

    * Rusting iron

    In the case of the broken plate, the composition of the plate material (ceramic, glass, etc.) remains the same. It's just been broken into smaller pieces.
