  • Cations: Understanding Positively Charged Ions - Definition & Examples
An ion that has fewer electrons than protons is called a cation.

    Here's why:

    * Protons: Positively charged particles in the nucleus of an atom.

    * Electrons: Negatively charged particles orbiting the nucleus.

    * Neutral Atom: An atom with an equal number of protons and electrons, resulting in no overall charge.

    * Ion: An atom that has gained or lost electrons, giving it a net positive or negative charge.

When an atom loses electrons, it has more protons than electrons, resulting in a net positive charge. This positively charged ion is called a cation.
