    Lithium is a cation.

    Here's why:

    * Metals tend to lose electrons to become positively charged ions (cations).

    * Lithium is a metal, and it has one valence electron (electron in its outermost shell).

    * To achieve a stable electron configuration (like the noble gases), lithium easily loses this one electron, becoming Li+.
