  • Caustic Soda: Natural Sources & Production Process - Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is not naturally occurring in its pure form.

However, it can be derived from natural sources through a process called electrolysis.

    Here's how it works:

    1. Saltwater (brine) is the starting material. Brine is a natural solution containing sodium chloride (NaCl).

    2. Electrolysis: An electric current is passed through the brine solution. This separates the sodium chloride into sodium ions (Na+) and chloride ions (Cl-).

    3. Reaction: The sodium ions react with water (H2O) to form sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen gas (H2).

So, while caustic soda itself isn't found directly in nature, it can be produced from naturally occurring saltwater.
