    Chemists study three fundamental characteristics of matter:

    1. Composition: This refers to the types and amounts of substances that make up a sample of matter. For example, water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen atoms in a specific ratio. Chemists investigate the elements and compounds present in a substance, their relative amounts, and how they interact.

    2. Structure: This focuses on the arrangement of atoms and molecules within matter. Chemists explore the shapes of molecules, the bonds that hold them together, and how these structures influence the properties of the substance. For instance, the difference in structure between diamond and graphite, both made of carbon, results in vastly different properties.

    3. Properties: This examines the observable characteristics of matter, such as its physical state (solid, liquid, gas), color, density, melting point, boiling point, reactivity, and conductivity. These properties are often directly related to the composition and structure of the substance.

    These three characteristics are interconnected and help chemists understand the behavior of matter, from everyday materials to complex biological systems.
