  • Carbon Dioxide in Soda: The Science Behind the Fizz
The solute that gives carbonated beverages their bubbly taste is carbon dioxide (CO2).

When CO2 is dissolved in water under pressure, it forms carbonic acid (H2CO3). This acid gives the beverages their characteristic tart, slightly acidic flavor. The dissolved CO2 also creates the tiny bubbles that we see and feel when we drink carbonated beverages.
