  • Ammonia's Solubility in Water: A Chemical Explanation
The gas with the greatest solubility in water is ammonia (NH₃).

    Here's why:

    * Polarity: Ammonia is a polar molecule due to its lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom. Water is also a polar molecule. "Like dissolves like," meaning polar substances dissolve well in other polar substances.

    * Hydrogen bonding: Ammonia can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, further increasing its solubility.

While other gases like carbon dioxide (CO₂) and oxygen (O₂) are also soluble in water to some extent, their solubility is significantly less than ammonia's due to their non-polar nature and lack of hydrogen bonding capability.
